Get Excited

It all started a couple of years ago when I weighed myself for the first time since college…I had no idea what I weighed but guessed it was just slightly above average for someone my height (5’3″). A coworker was starting a biggest loser competition and I figured “why not?” So I bravely marched over to her cubicle and stepped on the scale to get my starting weight. When I looked down and my eyes met that evil number I had to choke back tears and quickly Powerwalk back over to my desk. How could this be? I thought I was “average” and the sad thing is, I probably was. I weighed 189lbs which means I had somehow gained over 40lbs since I graduated college. I had no idea how that happened because I ate the same as all my friends and worked on my elliptical 20 minutes a few times a week. All I knew is that I needed to make a change. A BIG change! That’s when I began working harder than I ever had and actually eating for function instead of taste.
If any of you are like me, you’ve probably looked in the mirror and been disappointed with what you saw. Even if you’re at your “ideal weight” you can probably find a few things you’d like to change about yourself….maybe trade in your muffin top for chiseled obliques and a sixpack? Maybe lose that “second wave” even slender women have haunting their underarms. Or my favorite, the handful of extra fat that collects around our hips, which I like to call “saddlebags”.
Ah yes, we all have something about us we’d like to tighten up or maybe just disappear, but it isn’t going to happen just because we look in the mirror and wish it so. You may be wondering if I have some secret formula or pill that will make you fit and healthy (and maybe even look good in those skinny jeans you’ve been hiding in your closet). Well guess what?! I do…it’s called commitment and HARD work.
I know, I know that’s not what you wanted to hear and you’ve heard it a million times before. But if you really want to see that body in the mirror change, you’re going to have to get active and most importantly, eat right. I’ve tried many many many different diets and pills. That doesn’t make me an expert, but I can share with you what I’ve learned…Diets don’t work!! Changing your lifestyle does….I am a strong believer in Clean Eating and mixing it up with your workouts. I’ll get more into that in future posts.
I may not be at my goal weight yet but I’m almost 45 lbs less than I was on my first weigh in and in the best shape of my life. I’m working out at least 6 days a week and surviving workouts with my trainer I never could have lived through 2 short years ago. Most importantly, I’m happy with the progress I’ve made. I’m still working and shaping my body but I’m a whole lot closer than I was 2 years ago because I decided not to put my fitness off any longer. If only I had started 4 years ago!! :) why do we spend so much time on our hair and makeup and outfits but don’t take the time to plan out our meals or go for a jog. Those are the changes that will really improve quality of life.
One of my goals is to become a personal trainer and maybe someday train to compete in a figure competition….no, that doesn’t mean ill look like she-hulk in a bikini…yes, they do douse themselves in orange tanning cream and that would look horrifying with my red hair, but still having the confidence to strut on that stage and show off your hard work would be an amazing experience. It will take very hard work and a strong committal to eat clean and enough food to maintain my muscle growth. Not to mention probably at least 12 months to shed my extra fluff and whip my body into serious shape. I may never actually compete but I say why not train like the hardcore athletes and fitness icons we all look up to. We should dream big for ourselves. why shouldn’t we after all when we have the ability to choose what’s going into our bodies? tell yourself you can do it, get excited, and GET TO WORK!! :-)
